The Old Salt Road
A new itinerary featuring an old road or kaido, a Shio no Michi routes which connected the Sea of Japan to the north, and the Pacific in the south, to the province of Shinano (present-day Nagano Prefecture). Salt for preserving foods was carried along these roads for processing in the Nagano area.
The routes in Northern Nagano are called the Chikuni Kaido.
Meet and train to Northern Nagano. By road to our base in the Hakuba area for the next few nights.
First day hiking along a section of the Old Salt Road.
Second day hiking along the Old Salt Road.
Third day hiking along the Old Salt Road. Overnight lodge.
Short drive to our next base, with a short country walk on the way. Our accommodation has natural hot springs baths.
Overnight mountain hut.
A 5-hour hike over mountain peaks and passes with great views of the North Alps on clear days. Our accommodation has natural hot springs baths.
Overnight mountain lodge.
Drive to Matsumoto. Sightseeing after a delicious lunch featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients including buckwheat soba noodles. Fine dining at our comfortable lodging.
Train back to Tokyo where the tour ends. Onward travel.
